Empowering research students to transform our world through technology: the potential applications of educational technology in secondary science research
Friday March 21, 2025 9:50am - 10:35am EDT
The Plainedge Advanced Science Research Program guides each student on a journey of scientific discovery – allowing each student to explore an interest while fostering skills in scientific and data literacy, problem solving, and critical thinking. Join us as we lead a conversation, sharing how 21st century skills are scaffolded in an independent study experience – from 10th grade to 12th grade, accelerating the innate potential of high school students to employ the data science and communication skills necessary for success in college and beyond. You will see how students learn and employ mechatronics, robotics (Arduino microcontrollers), 3D scanning and modeling (Z-space, Blender, and Unreal Engine), data sonification (Jython), geographic information systems (arcGIS), and even AI (Python Natural Language Processing and machine learning) in their projects. See how your students can become the role models for their community and promote cultures of science inquiry at all levels of K-12 education. We are excited to share resources for your school’s research programs, including suggestions for acquiring and utilizing big-data, building connection points with outside research entities, and even a foundational oncology science literacy curriculum. See how your students can explore compelling questions using technology and how their ideas can translate into results that can transform our world.

Friday March 21, 2025 12:50pm - 1:35pm EDT
The beauty of education is it brings together people, both students and teachers, of different backgrounds and interests with the common theme of learning and growing. In Plainedge STEAM Studios, students are empowered to explore their imaginations and tell their own stories through cutting-edge technologies. See how student expression blossoms using tools such as WeVideo, Canva, and Buncee. Come learn how students can immerse themselves into a video game with Bloxels video game engineering. Discover how you can empower students to create a mobile app that will help another child communicate. Find out how students can produce their own animated stories through Google Slides and so much more! Imaginative storytelling through tech has no limits in our STEAM Studios and we are excited to collaborate as our collective stories evolve.

Making Connections through Digital Storytelling with the Influencer Generation
Friday March 21, 2025 2:00pm - 2:45pm EDT
In our world of powerful social media and endless content consumption and creation, it can be hard to engage and interact with students in meaningful ways in the classroom. By using digital tools and appealing to some of the characteristics of the social media platforms that they gravitate towards, students can demonstrate their learning and feel empowered, heard, and understood. Take back your classroom with strategies designed to harness students' proclivity for and skills with using social media.
